A fruit stall sold dragon fruits at 60¢ and limes at 30¢ each. Abi bought some dragon fruits and Kathy bought some limes from the stall. Abi spent $1.20 more than Kathy, but had 6 fruits fewer than Kathy.

1. How many dragon fruits did Abi buy?
2. How much did Kathy spend on the limes?

Number of dragon fruits that Abi bought = 1 u
Number of limes that Kathy bought = 1 u + 6

Amount that Abi paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Kathy paid = 0.3(1 u + 6) = 0.3 u + 1.8

If Kathy spent another $1.20, both Kathy and Abi would spend the same amount.

0.6 u = 0.3 u + 1.8 + 1.2
0.6 u - 0.3 u = 1.8 + 1.2
0.3 u = 3

1 u = 3 ÷ 0.3 = 10

Number of dragon fruits that Abi bought
= 1 u
= 10

Amount that Kathy spent on the limes
= 0.3 u + 1.8
= 0.3 x 10 + 1.8
= 3 + 1.8
= $4.80
