PSLE Xuan and Penelope each had a plate of dough of the same mass for making muffins. The same mass of dough was used for each muffin. Xuan made 34 muffins and had 460 g of dough left. Penelope made 16 muffins and had 1.09 kg of dough left.
- What was the mass of dough needed for each muffin?
- With the remaining dough from both girls, how many more such muffins can be made at most?
(a)
Difference between the number of muffins made by Xuan and Penelope
= 34 - 16
= 18
1 kg = 1000 g
1.09 kg = 1.09 x 1000 = 1090 g
Difference between the remaining dough left by Penelope and Xuan
= 1090 - 460
= 630 g
Mass of 18 muffins = 630 g
Mass of 1 muffin
= 630 ÷ 18
= 35 g
(b)
Total remaining dough left
= 1090 + 460
= 1550 g
Sets of 35 g
= 1550 ÷ 35
= 44 r 10
Number of muffins = 44
Answer(s): (a) 35 g; (b) 44
