PSLE Lucy and Hazel each had a plate of dough of the same mass for making scones. The same mass of dough was used for each scone. Lucy made 30 scones and had 400 g of dough left. Hazel made 10 scones and had 1.3 kg of dough left.
- What was the mass of dough needed for each scone?
- With the remaining dough from both girls, how many more such scones can be made at most?
(a)
Difference between the number of scones made by Lucy and Hazel
= 30 - 10
= 20
1 kg = 1000 g
1.3 kg = 1.3 x 1000 = 1300 g
Difference between the remaining dough left by Hazel and Lucy
= 1300 - 400
= 900 g
Mass of 20 scones = 900 g
Mass of 1 scone
= 900 ÷ 20
= 45 g
(b)
Total remaining dough left
= 1300 + 400
= 1700 g
Sets of 45 g
= 1700 ÷ 45
= 37 r 35
Number of scones = 37
Answer(s): (a) 45 g; (b) 37
