PSLE Hilda and Sarah each had a plate of dough of the same mass for making puffs. The same mass of dough was used for each puff. Hilda made 32 puffs and had 460 g of dough left. Sarah made 18 puffs and had 1.09 kg of dough left.
- What was the mass of dough needed for each puff?
- With the remaining dough from both girls, how many more such puffs can be made at most?
(a)
Difference between the number of puffs made by Hilda and Sarah
= 32 - 18
= 14
1 kg = 1000 g
1.09 kg = 1.09 x 1000 = 1090 g
Difference between the remaining dough left by Sarah and Hilda
= 1090 - 460
= 630 g
Mass of 14 puffs = 630 g
Mass of 1 puff
= 630 ÷ 14
= 45 g
(b)
Total remaining dough left
= 1090 + 460
= 1550 g
Sets of 45 g
= 1550 ÷ 45
= 34 r 20
Number of puffs = 34
Answer(s): (a) 45 g; (b) 34
