PSLE Mary and Hilda each had a plate of dough of the same mass for making tarts. The same mass of dough was used for each tart. Mary made 31 tarts and had 355 g of dough left. Hilda made 13 tarts and had 1.165 kg of dough left.
- What was the mass of dough needed for each tart?
- With the remaining dough from both girls, how many more such tarts can be made at most?
(a)
Difference between the number of tarts made by Mary and Hilda
= 31 - 13
= 18
1 kg = 1000 g
1.165 kg = 1.165 x 1000 = 1165 g
Difference between the remaining dough left by Hilda and Mary
= 1165 - 355
= 810 g
Mass of 18 tarts = 810 g
Mass of 1 tart
= 810 ÷ 18
= 45 g
(b)
Total remaining dough left
= 1165 + 355
= 1520 g
Sets of 45 g
= 1520 ÷ 45
= 33 r 35
Number of tarts = 33
Answer(s): (a) 45 g; (b) 33
