PSLE Gem and Esther each had a plate of dough of the same mass for making muffins. The same mass of dough was used for each muffin. Gem made 30 muffins and had 500 g of dough left. Esther made 16 muffins and had 1.13 kg of dough left.
- What was the mass of dough needed for each muffin?
- With the remaining dough from both girls, how many more such muffins can be made at most?
(a)
Difference between the number of muffins made by Gem and Esther
= 30 - 16
= 14
1 kg = 1000 g
1.13 kg = 1.13 x 1000 = 1130 g
Difference between the remaining dough left by Esther and Gem
= 1130 - 500
= 630 g
Mass of 14 muffins = 630 g
Mass of 1 muffin
= 630 ÷ 14
= 45 g
(b)
Total remaining dough left
= 1130 + 500
= 1630 g
Sets of 45 g
= 1630 ÷ 45
= 36 r 10
Number of muffins = 36
Answer(s): (a) 45 g; (b) 36
