PSLE Julie and Esther each had a plate of dough of the same mass for making muffins. The same mass of dough was used for each muffin. Julie made 35 muffins and had 500 g of dough left. Esther made 17 muffins and had 1.04 kg of dough left.
- What was the mass of dough needed for each muffin?
- With the remaining dough from both girls, how many more such muffins can be made at most?
(a)
Difference between the number of muffins made by Julie and Esther
= 35 - 17
= 18
1 kg = 1000 g
1.04 kg = 1.04 x 1000 = 1040 g
Difference between the remaining dough left by Esther and Julie
= 1040 - 500
= 540 g
Mass of 18 muffins = 540 g
Mass of 1 muffin
= 540 ÷ 18
= 30 g
(b)
Total remaining dough left
= 1040 + 500
= 1540 g
Sets of 30 g
= 1540 ÷ 30
= 51 r 10
Number of muffins = 51
Answer(s): (a) 30 g; (b) 51
