PSLE Fiona and Abi each had a plate of dough of the same mass for making scones. The same mass of dough was used for each scone. Fiona made 38 scones and had 430 g of dough left. Abi made 20 scones and had 1.15 kg of dough left.
- What was the mass of dough needed for each scone?
- With the remaining dough from both girls, how many more such scones can be made at most?
(a)
Difference between the number of scones made by Fiona and Abi
= 38 - 20
= 18
1 kg = 1000 g
1.15 kg = 1.15 x 1000 = 1150 g
Difference between the remaining dough left by Abi and Fiona
= 1150 - 430
= 720 g
Mass of 18 scones = 720 g
Mass of 1 scone
= 720 ÷ 18
= 40 g
(b)
Total remaining dough left
= 1150 + 430
= 1580 g
Sets of 40 g
= 1580 ÷ 40
= 39 r 20
Number of scones = 39
Answer(s): (a) 40 g; (b) 39
