PSLE Wendy and Rachel each had a plate of dough of the same mass for making scones. The same mass of dough was used for each scone. Wendy made 30 scones and had 500 g of dough left. Rachel made 10 scones and had 1.4 kg of dough left.
- What was the mass of dough needed for each scone?
- With the remaining dough from both girls, how many more such scones can be made at most?
(a)
Difference between the number of scones made by Wendy and Rachel
= 30 - 10
= 20
1 kg = 1000 g
1.4 kg = 1.4 x 1000 = 1400 g
Difference between the remaining dough left by Rachel and Wendy
= 1400 - 500
= 900 g
Mass of 20 scones = 900 g
Mass of 1 scone
= 900 ÷ 20
= 45 g
(b)
Total remaining dough left
= 1400 + 500
= 1900 g
Sets of 45 g
= 1900 ÷ 45
= 42 r 10
Number of scones = 42
Answer(s): (a) 45 g; (b) 42
