In a shop, candles are sold only in boxes. A box of 8 short candles costs $3.60 and a box of 6 long candles costs $6.40.

1. Tom wants 13 short candles and 3 long candles for his lanterns. What is the least amount of money that Tom will need to spend on the candles?
2. Vanessa bought 4 more long candles than short candles from the shop. The total number of candles she bought was fewer than 70. How much did Vanessa spend on the candles altogether?

= 13 ÷ 8
= 1 r 5

Number of boxes of short candles that Tom needs to buy
= 1 + 1
= 2

Amount that Tom needs to spend on short candles
= 2 x 3.60
= $7.20

Least amount that Tom will need to spend
= 7.20 + 6.40
= $13.60
