- Luc used all his $10-notes to buy a gift. He then had $238 less than Tom. How many $10-notes did Tom have?
(a)
The three boys had the same number of notes.
$2-notes have a lower denomination than $10-notes.
Since Tom had only $10-notes, he had the most money.
(b)
Difference in the number of notes of different values
= 11 - 5
= 6
Difference in the value of $10-notes and $2-notes
= 10 - 2
= $8
Difference in the total value of Ned's and Luc's notes
= 6 x 8
= $48
(c)
Value of $2-notes that Luc had left
= 11 x 2
= $22
Total value that Tom had
= 238 + 22
= $260
Number of $10-notes that Tom had
= 260 ÷ 10
= 26
Answer(s): (a) Tom; (b) $48; (c) 26
