1. How many orange staplers and blue staplers did Valen sell altogether?
2. He sold 50% of his staplers. 75% of the staplers left unsold were orange. How many blue staplers did Valen have at first?

= 5 u
= 5 x 40
= 200

= 100% - 50%
= 50%

50% of the staplers that were sold = 5 u
50% of the staplers that were left unsold = 5 u

Percent of the staplers left unsold that were orange = 75%
Percent of the staplers left unsold that were blue = 100% - 75% = 25%

Number of the staplers left unsold that were blue
= 25% x 5 u
= ²⁵₁₀₀ x 5 u
= 1.25 u

Number of blue staplers that Valen had at first
= 1.25 u + 3 u
= 4.25 u
= 4.25 x 40
= 170
