PSLE At a basketball match, 50% of the tickets were sold at full price and 20% of the tickets at half price. The remaining 240 tickets were given away free. The total amount of money collected was $24000. What was the price of the ticket at half price?
Percentage of the tickets given free
= 100% - 50% - 20%
= 30%
30% → 240
1% → 240 ÷ 30 = 8
Number of tickets sold at full price
= 50% of the tickets
= 50 x 8
= 400
Number of tickets sold at half price
= 20% of the tickets
= 20 x 8
= 160

Cost of 1 full price ticket = 2 u
Cost of 1 half price ticket = 1 u
Total amount collected
= 400 x 2 u + 160 x 1 u
= 800 u + 160 u
= 960 u
960 u = 24000
1 u = 24000 ÷ 960 = 25
Price of the ticket at half price
= 1 u
= $25
