PSLE At a basketball match, 60% of the tickets were sold at full price and 30% of the tickets at half price. The remaining 80 tickets were given away free. The total amount of money collected was $14400. What was the price of the ticket at half price?
Percentage of the tickets given free
= 100% - 60% - 30%
= 10%
10% → 80
1% → 80 ÷ 10 = 8
Number of tickets sold at full price
= 60% of the tickets
= 60 x 8
= 480
Number of tickets sold at half price
= 30% of the tickets
= 30 x 8
= 240

Cost of 1 full price ticket = 2 u
Cost of 1 half price ticket = 1 u
Total amount collected
= 480 x 2 u + 240 x 1 u
= 960 u + 240 u
= 1200 u
1200 u = 14400
1 u = 14400 ÷ 1200 = 12
Price of the ticket at half price
= 1 u
= $12
