PSLE At a basketball match, 40% of the tickets were sold at full price and 10% of the tickets at half price. The remaining 400 tickets were given away free. The total amount of money collected was $10800. What was the price of the ticket at half price?
Percentage of the tickets given free
= 100% - 40% - 10%
= 50%
50% → 400
1% → 400 ÷ 50 = 8
Number of tickets sold at full price
= 40% of the tickets
= 40 x 8
= 320
Number of tickets sold at half price
= 10% of the tickets
= 10 x 8
= 80

Cost of 1 full price ticket = 2 u
Cost of 1 half price ticket = 1 u
Total amount collected
= 320 x 2 u + 80 x 1 u
= 640 u + 80 u
= 720 u
720 u = 10800
1 u = 10800 ÷ 720 = 15
Price of the ticket at half price
= 1 u
= $15
Answer(s): $15
