PSLE Ivory had a rectangular piece of paper, 42 cm by 20.1 cm. She cut out as many squares as possible from the paper. The side of each square was 3 cm.
- How many squares did Ivory cut out?
- What area of the paper was left?
(a)
Number of squares that can be cut out breadthwise
= 20.1 ÷ 3
= 6 r 2.1
Number of squares that can be cut out lengthwise
= 42 ÷ 3
= 14 r 0
Total number of squares
= 14 x 6
= 84
(b)
Remaining breadth of the paper left = 2.1 cm
Area of the paper left
= 42 x 2.1
= 88.2 cm
2 Answer(s): (a) 84; (b) 88.2 cm
