PSLE Opal had a rectangular piece of paper, 76.2 cm by 40 cm. She cut out as many squares as possible from the paper. The side of each square was 5 cm.
- How many squares did Opal cut out?
- What area of the paper was left?
(a)
Number of squares that can be cut out lengthwise
= 76.2 ÷ 5
= 15 r 1.2
Number of squares that can be cut out breadthwise
= 40 ÷ 5
= 8 r 0
Total number of squares
= 8 x 15
= 120
(b)
Remaining length of the paper left = 1.2 cm
Area of the paper left
= 1.2 x 40
= 48 cm
2 Answer(s): (a) 120; (b) 48 cm
