PSLE Gillian had a rectangular piece of paper, 62 cm by 33.3 cm. She cut out as many squares as possible from the paper. The side of each square was 2 cm.
- How many squares did Gillian cut out?
- What area of the paper was left?
(a)
Number of squares that can be cut out breadthwise
= 33.3 ÷ 2
= 16 r 1.3
Number of squares that can be cut out lengthwise
= 62 ÷ 2
= 31 r 0
Total number of squares
= 31 x 16
= 496
(b)
Remaining breadth of the paper left = 1.3 cm
Area of the paper left
= 62 x 1.3
= 80.6 cm
2 Answer(s): (a) 496; (b) 80.6 cm
