PSLE Emma had a rectangular piece of paper, 60 cm by 30.1 cm. She cut out as many squares as possible from the paper. The side of each square was 3 cm.
- How many squares did Emma cut out?
- What area of the paper was left?
(a)
Number of squares that can be cut out breadthwise
= 30.1 ÷ 3
= 10 r 0.1
Number of squares that can be cut out lengthwise
= 60 ÷ 3
= 20 r 0
Total number of squares
= 20 x 10
= 200
(b)
Remaining breadth of the paper left = 0.1 cm
Area of the paper left
= 60 x 0.1
= 6 cm
2 Answer(s): (a) 200; (b) 6 cm
