PSLE Hilda had a rectangular piece of paper, 54 cm by 36.6 cm. She cut out as many squares as possible from the paper. The side of each square was 3 cm.
- How many squares did Hilda cut out?
- What area of the paper was left?
(a)
Number of squares that can be cut out breadthwise
= 36.6 ÷ 3
= 12 r 0.6
Number of squares that can be cut out lengthwise
= 54 ÷ 3
= 18 r 0
Total number of squares
= 18 x 12
= 216
(b)
Remaining breadth of the paper left = 0.6 cm
Area of the paper left
= 54 x 0.6
= 32.4 cm
2 Answer(s): (a) 216; (b) 32.4 cm
