PSLE Natalie had a rectangular piece of paper, 42 cm by 21.6 cm. She cut out as many squares as possible from the paper. The side of each square was 2 cm.
- How many squares did Natalie cut out?
- What area of the paper was left?
(a)
Number of squares that can be cut out breadthwise
= 21.6 ÷ 2
= 10 r 1.6
Number of squares that can be cut out lengthwise
= 42 ÷ 2
= 21 r 0
Total number of squares
= 21 x 10
= 210
(b)
Remaining breadth of the paper left = 1.6 cm
Area of the paper left
= 42 x 1.6
= 67.2 cm
2 Answer(s): (a) 210; (b) 67.2 cm
