PSLE Elyse had a rectangular piece of paper, 52 cm by 30.2 cm. She cut out as many squares as possible from the paper. The side of each square was 2 cm.
- How many squares did Elyse cut out?
- What area of the paper was left?
(a)
Number of squares that can be cut out breadthwise
= 30.2 ÷ 2
= 15 r 0.2
Number of squares that can be cut out lengthwise
= 52 ÷ 2
= 26 r 0
Total number of squares
= 26 x 15
= 390
(b)
Remaining breadth of the paper left = 0.2 cm
Area of the paper left
= 52 x 0.2
= 10.4 cm
2 Answer(s): (a) 390; (b) 10.4 cm
