PSLE Hazel had a rectangular piece of paper, 45.9 cm by 36 cm. She cut out as many squares as possible from the paper. The side of each square was 3 cm.
- How many squares did Hazel cut out?
- What area of the paper was left?
(a)
Number of squares that can be cut out lengthwise
= 45.9 ÷ 3
= 15 r 0.9
Number of squares that can be cut out breadthwise
= 36 ÷ 3
= 12 r 0
Total number of squares
= 12 x 15
= 180
(b)
Remaining length of the paper left = 0.9 cm
Area of the paper left
= 0.9 x 36
= 32.4 cm
2 Answer(s): (a) 180; (b) 32.4 cm
