PSLE Tammy had a rectangular piece of paper, 50 cm by 27.6 cm. She cut out as many squares as possible from the paper. The side of each square was 5 cm.
- How many squares did Tammy cut out?
- What area of the paper was left?
(a)
Number of squares that can be cut out breadthwise
= 27.6 ÷ 5
= 5 r 2.6
Number of squares that can be cut out lengthwise
= 50 ÷ 5
= 10 r 0
Total number of squares
= 10 x 5
= 50
(b)
Remaining breadth of the paper left = 2.6 cm
Area of the paper left
= 50 x 2.6
= 130 cm
2 Answer(s): (a) 50; (b) 130 cm
