PSLE Opal had a rectangular piece of paper, 62 cm by 29.7 cm. She cut out as many squares as possible from the paper. The side of each square was 2 cm.
- How many squares did Opal cut out?
- What area of the paper was left?
(a)
Number of squares that can be cut out breadthwise
= 29.7 ÷ 2
= 14 r 1.7
Number of squares that can be cut out lengthwise
= 62 ÷ 2
= 31 r 0
Total number of squares
= 31 x 14
= 434
(b)
Remaining breadth of the paper left = 1.7 cm
Area of the paper left
= 62 x 1.7
= 105.4 cm
2 Answer(s): (a) 434; (b) 105.4 cm
