PSLE Shannon had a rectangular piece of paper, 48 cm by 34.8 cm. She cut out as many squares as possible from the paper. The side of each square was 2 cm.
- How many squares did Shannon cut out?
- What area of the paper was left?
(a)
Number of squares that can be cut out breadthwise
= 34.8 ÷ 2
= 17 r 0.8
Number of squares that can be cut out lengthwise
= 48 ÷ 2
= 24 r 0
Total number of squares
= 24 x 17
= 408
(b)
Remaining breadth of the paper left = 0.8 cm
Area of the paper left
= 48 x 0.8
= 38.4 cm
2 Answer(s): (a) 408; (b) 38.4 cm
