PSLE Ivory had a rectangular piece of paper, 45 cm by 38.7 cm. She cut out as many squares as possible from the paper. The side of each square was 5 cm.
- How many squares did Ivory cut out?
- What area of the paper was left?
(a)
Number of squares that can be cut out breadthwise
= 38.7 ÷ 5
= 7 r 3.7
Number of squares that can be cut out lengthwise
= 45 ÷ 5
= 9 r 0
Total number of squares
= 9 x 7
= 63
(b)
Remaining breadth of the paper left = 3.7 cm
Area of the paper left
= 45 x 3.7
= 166.5 cm
2 Answer(s): (a) 63; (b) 166.5 cm
