PSLE Hazel had a rectangular piece of paper, 50.7 cm by 40 cm. She cut out as many squares as possible from the paper. The side of each square was 2 cm.
- How many squares did Hazel cut out?
- What area of the paper was left?
(a)
Number of squares that can be cut out lengthwise
= 50.7 ÷ 2
= 25 r 0.7
Number of squares that can be cut out breadthwise
= 40 ÷ 2
= 20 r 0
Total number of squares
= 20 x 25
= 500
(b)
Remaining length of the paper left = 0.7 cm
Area of the paper left
= 0.7 x 40
= 28 cm
2 Answer(s): (a) 500; (b) 28 cm
