PSLE Gem had a rectangular piece of paper, 44 cm by 37.2 cm. She cut out as many squares as possible from the paper. The side of each square was 4 cm.
- How many squares did Gem cut out?
- What area of the paper was left?
(a)
Number of squares that can be cut out breadthwise
= 37.2 ÷ 4
= 9 r 1.2
Number of squares that can be cut out lengthwise
= 44 ÷ 4
= 11 r 0
Total number of squares
= 11 x 9
= 99
(b)
Remaining breadth of the paper left = 1.2 cm
Area of the paper left
= 44 x 1.2
= 52.8 cm
2 Answer(s): (a) 99; (b) 52.8 cm
