PSLE Opal had a rectangular piece of paper, 46 cm by 29.1 cm. She cut out as many squares as possible from the paper. The side of each square was 2 cm.
- How many squares did Opal cut out?
- What area of the paper was left?
(a)
Number of squares that can be cut out breadthwise
= 29.1 ÷ 2
= 14 r 1.1
Number of squares that can be cut out lengthwise
= 46 ÷ 2
= 23 r 0
Total number of squares
= 23 x 14
= 322
(b)
Remaining breadth of the paper left = 1.1 cm
Area of the paper left
= 46 x 1.1
= 50.6 cm
2 Answer(s): (a) 322; (b) 50.6 cm
