PSLE Jade had a rectangular piece of paper, 54 cm by 32.1 cm. She cut out as many squares as possible from the paper. The side of each square was 6 cm.
- How many squares did Jade cut out?
- What area of the paper was left?
(a)
Number of squares that can be cut out breadthwise
= 32.1 ÷ 6
= 5 r 2.1
Number of squares that can be cut out lengthwise
= 54 ÷ 6
= 9 r 0
Total number of squares
= 9 x 5
= 45
(b)
Remaining breadth of the paper left = 2.1 cm
Area of the paper left
= 54 x 2.1
= 113.4 cm
2 Answer(s): (a) 45; (b) 113.4 cm
