PSLE Usha had a rectangular piece of paper, 54 cm by 25.3 cm. She cut out as many squares as possible from the paper. The side of each square was 3 cm.
- How many squares did Usha cut out?
- What area of the paper was left?
(a)
Number of squares that can be cut out breadthwise
= 25.3 ÷ 3
= 8 r 1.3
Number of squares that can be cut out lengthwise
= 54 ÷ 3
= 18 r 0
Total number of squares
= 18 x 8
= 144
(b)
Remaining breadth of the paper left = 1.3 cm
Area of the paper left
= 54 x 1.3
= 70.2 cm
2 Answer(s): (a) 144; (b) 70.2 cm
