PSLE Barbara had a rectangular piece of paper, 40 cm by 36.3 cm. She cut out as many squares as possible from the paper. The side of each square was 4 cm.
- How many squares did Barbara cut out?
- What area of the paper was left?
(a)
Number of squares that can be cut out breadthwise
= 36.3 ÷ 4
= 9 r 0.3
Number of squares that can be cut out lengthwise
= 40 ÷ 4
= 10 r 0
Total number of squares
= 10 x 9
= 90
(b)
Remaining breadth of the paper left = 0.3 cm
Area of the paper left
= 40 x 0.3
= 12 cm
2 Answer(s): (a) 90; (b) 12 cm
