PSLE Vanessa had a rectangular piece of paper, 50 cm by 31.5 cm. She cut out as many squares as possible from the paper. The side of each square was 5 cm.
- How many squares did Vanessa cut out?
- What area of the paper was left?
(a)
Number of squares that can be cut out breadthwise
= 31.5 ÷ 5
= 6 r 1.5
Number of squares that can be cut out lengthwise
= 50 ÷ 5
= 10 r 0
Total number of squares
= 10 x 6
= 60
(b)
Remaining breadth of the paper left = 1.5 cm
Area of the paper left
= 50 x 1.5
= 75 cm
2 Answer(s): (a) 60; (b) 75 cm
