PSLE Kathy had a rectangular piece of paper, 50 cm by 28.9 cm. She cut out as many squares as possible from the paper. The side of each square was 2 cm.
- How many squares did Kathy cut out?
- What area of the paper was left?
(a)
Number of squares that can be cut out breadthwise
= 28.9 ÷ 2
= 14 r 0.9
Number of squares that can be cut out lengthwise
= 50 ÷ 2
= 25 r 0
Total number of squares
= 25 x 14
= 350
(b)
Remaining breadth of the paper left = 0.9 cm
Area of the paper left
= 50 x 0.9
= 45 cm
2 Answer(s): (a) 350; (b) 45 cm
