PSLE Vanessa had a rectangular piece of paper, 40 cm by 34.4 cm. She cut out as many squares as possible from the paper. The side of each square was 2 cm.
- How many squares did Vanessa cut out?
- What area of the paper was left?
(a)
Number of squares that can be cut out breadthwise
= 34.4 ÷ 2
= 17 r 0.4
Number of squares that can be cut out lengthwise
= 40 ÷ 2
= 20 r 0
Total number of squares
= 20 x 17
= 340
(b)
Remaining breadth of the paper left = 0.4 cm
Area of the paper left
= 40 x 0.4
= 16 cm
2 Answer(s): (a) 340; (b) 16 cm
