PSLE Lucy had a rectangular piece of paper, 42 cm by 24.2 cm. She cut out as many squares as possible from the paper. The side of each square was 2 cm.
- How many squares did Lucy cut out?
- What area of the paper was left?
(a)
Number of squares that can be cut out breadthwise
= 24.2 ÷ 2
= 12 r 0.2
Number of squares that can be cut out lengthwise
= 42 ÷ 2
= 21 r 0
Total number of squares
= 21 x 12
= 252
(b)
Remaining breadth of the paper left = 0.2 cm
Area of the paper left
= 42 x 0.2
= 8.4 cm
2 Answer(s): (a) 252; (b) 8.4 cm
