PSLE Abi had a rectangular piece of paper, 55 cm by 28.9 cm. She cut out as many squares as possible from the paper. The side of each square was 5 cm.
- How many squares did Abi cut out?
- What area of the paper was left?
(a)
Number of squares that can be cut out breadthwise
= 28.9 ÷ 5
= 5 r 3.9
Number of squares that can be cut out lengthwise
= 55 ÷ 5
= 11 r 0
Total number of squares
= 11 x 5
= 55
(b)
Remaining breadth of the paper left = 3.9 cm
Area of the paper left
= 55 x 3.9
= 214.5 cm
2 Answer(s): (a) 55; (b) 214.5 cm
