PSLE Yen had a rectangular piece of paper, 45 cm by 22.5 cm. She cut out as many squares as possible from the paper. The side of each square was 3 cm.
- How many squares did Yen cut out?
- What area of the paper was left?
(a)
Number of squares that can be cut out breadthwise
= 22.5 ÷ 3
= 7 r 1.5
Number of squares that can be cut out lengthwise
= 45 ÷ 3
= 15 r 0
Total number of squares
= 15 x 7
= 105
(b)
Remaining breadth of the paper left = 1.5 cm
Area of the paper left
= 45 x 1.5
= 67.5 cm
2 Answer(s): (a) 105; (b) 67.5 cm
