PSLE Eva had a rectangular piece of paper, 60 cm by 37.7 cm. She cut out as many squares as possible from the paper. The side of each square was 4 cm.
- How many squares did Eva cut out?
- What area of the paper was left?
(a)
Number of squares that can be cut out breadthwise
= 37.7 ÷ 4
= 9 r 1.7
Number of squares that can be cut out lengthwise
= 60 ÷ 4
= 15 r 0
Total number of squares
= 15 x 9
= 135
(b)
Remaining breadth of the paper left = 1.7 cm
Area of the paper left
= 60 x 1.7
= 102 cm
2 Answer(s): (a) 135; (b) 102 cm
