PSLE Irene had a rectangular piece of paper, 55 cm by 30.1 cm. She cut out as many squares as possible from the paper. The side of each square was 5 cm.
- How many squares did Irene cut out?
- What area of the paper was left?
(a)
Number of squares that can be cut out breadthwise
= 30.1 ÷ 5
= 6 r 0.1
Number of squares that can be cut out lengthwise
= 55 ÷ 5
= 11 r 0
Total number of squares
= 11 x 6
= 66
(b)
Remaining breadth of the paper left = 0.1 cm
Area of the paper left
= 55 x 0.1
= 5.5 cm
2 Answer(s): (a) 66; (b) 5.5 cm
