PSLE Min had a rectangular piece of paper, 65 cm by 36.5 cm. She cut out as many squares as possible from the paper. The side of each square was 5 cm.
- How many squares did Min cut out?
- What area of the paper was left?
(a)
Number of squares that can be cut out breadthwise
= 36.5 ÷ 5
= 7 r 1.5
Number of squares that can be cut out lengthwise
= 65 ÷ 5
= 13 r 0
Total number of squares
= 13 x 7
= 91
(b)
Remaining breadth of the paper left = 1.5 cm
Area of the paper left
= 65 x 1.5
= 97.5 cm
2 Answer(s): (a) 91; (b) 97.5 cm
