PSLE Xylia had a rectangular piece of paper, 54 cm by 30.8 cm. She cut out as many squares as possible from the paper. The side of each square was 2 cm.
- How many squares did Xylia cut out?
- What area of the paper was left?
(a)
Number of squares that can be cut out breadthwise
= 30.8 ÷ 2
= 15 r 0.8
Number of squares that can be cut out lengthwise
= 54 ÷ 2
= 27 r 0
Total number of squares
= 27 x 15
= 405
(b)
Remaining breadth of the paper left = 0.8 cm
Area of the paper left
= 54 x 0.8
= 43.2 cm
2 Answer(s): (a) 405; (b) 43.2 cm
