PSLE Fanny had a rectangular piece of paper, 40.5 cm by 38 cm. She cut out as many squares as possible from the paper. The side of each square was 2 cm.
- How many squares did Fanny cut out?
- What area of the paper was left?
(a)
Number of squares that can be cut out lengthwise
= 40.5 ÷ 2
= 20 r 0.5
Number of squares that can be cut out breadthwise
= 38 ÷ 2
= 19 r 0
Total number of squares
= 19 x 20
= 380
(b)
Remaining length of the paper left = 0.5 cm
Area of the paper left
= 0.5 x 38
= 19 cm
2 Answer(s): (a) 380; (b) 19 cm
