PSLE Usha had a rectangular piece of paper, 43.2 cm by 34 cm. She cut out as many squares as possible from the paper. The side of each square was 2 cm.
- How many squares did Usha cut out?
- What area of the paper was left?
(a)
Number of squares that can be cut out lengthwise
= 43.2 ÷ 2
= 21 r 1.2
Number of squares that can be cut out breadthwise
= 34 ÷ 2
= 17 r 0
Total number of squares
= 17 x 21
= 357
(b)
Remaining length of the paper left = 1.2 cm
Area of the paper left
= 1.2 x 34
= 40.8 cm
2 Answer(s): (a) 357; (b) 40.8 cm
