PSLE Yen had a rectangular piece of paper, 45 cm by 22.8 cm. She cut out as many squares as possible from the paper. The side of each square was 5 cm.
- How many squares did Yen cut out?
- What area of the paper was left?
(a)
Number of squares that can be cut out breadthwise
= 22.8 ÷ 5
= 4 r 2.8
Number of squares that can be cut out lengthwise
= 45 ÷ 5
= 9 r 0
Total number of squares
= 9 x 4
= 36
(b)
Remaining breadth of the paper left = 2.8 cm
Area of the paper left
= 45 x 2.8
= 126 cm
2 Answer(s): (a) 36; (b) 126 cm
