PSLE Zara had a rectangular piece of paper, 50 cm by 37.2 cm. She cut out as many squares as possible from the paper. The side of each square was 2 cm.
- How many squares did Zara cut out?
- What area of the paper was left?
(a)
Number of squares that can be cut out breadthwise
= 37.2 ÷ 2
= 18 r 1.2
Number of squares that can be cut out lengthwise
= 50 ÷ 2
= 25 r 0
Total number of squares
= 25 x 18
= 450
(b)
Remaining breadth of the paper left = 1.2 cm
Area of the paper left
= 50 x 1.2
= 60 cm
2 Answer(s): (a) 450; (b) 60 cm
