PSLE Jen had a rectangular piece of paper, 64 cm by 37.6 cm. She cut out as many squares as possible from the paper. The side of each square was 2 cm.
- How many squares did Jen cut out?
- What area of the paper was left?
(a)
Number of squares that can be cut out breadthwise
= 37.6 ÷ 2
= 18 r 1.6
Number of squares that can be cut out lengthwise
= 64 ÷ 2
= 32 r 0
Total number of squares
= 32 x 18
= 576
(b)
Remaining breadth of the paper left = 1.6 cm
Area of the paper left
= 64 x 1.6
= 102.4 cm
2 Answer(s): (a) 576; (b) 102.4 cm
