PSLE Gabby had a rectangular piece of paper, 55.6 cm by 40 cm. She cut out as many squares as possible from the paper. The side of each square was 5 cm.
- How many squares did Gabby cut out?
- What area of the paper was left?
(a)
Number of squares that can be cut out lengthwise
= 55.6 ÷ 5
= 11 r 0.6
Number of squares that can be cut out breadthwise
= 40 ÷ 5
= 8 r 0
Total number of squares
= 8 x 11
= 88
(b)
Remaining length of the paper left = 0.6 cm
Area of the paper left
= 0.6 x 40
= 24 cm
2 Answer(s): (a) 88; (b) 24 cm
