Ivan and Paul were paid a total of $2180 for a job they did. Paul was paid $1380 less than Ivan.

1. How much was Paul paid for the job?
2. Ivan and Paul were paid based on the number of days they worked. Ivan worked 4 times as many days as Paul. Ivan was paid $5 more than Paul per day. How many days did Ivan work?

Amount that Paul was paid = 1 u
Amount that Ivan was paid = 1 u + 1380

Total amount paid
= 1 u + 1 u + 1380
= 2 u + 1380

2 u + 1380 = 2180
2 u = 2180 - 1380
2 u = 800

1 u = 800 ÷ 2 = 400

Amount that Paul was paid
= 1 u
= $400

(b)
Amount that Ivan was paid
= 1 u + 1380
= 400 + 1380
= $1780

Ivan worked 4 times as many days as Paul.

4 sets of Ivan's salary = $1780

1 set of Ivan's salary
= 1780 ÷ 4
= $445

1 set of Paul's salary = $400

Difference between each set of Ivan's and Paul's salaries
= 445 - 400
= $45

Number of days in 1 set
= 45 ÷ 5
= 9

Number of days that Ivan worked
= 4 x 9
= 36
